Why Are We Unique

eiMaths is honoured to be featured on the France 2 France Televisions as a learning centre in Singapore that provides learning materials for students to learn Mathematics in the CPA approach (Concrete – Pictorial – Abstract)

The above video was taken by Mr Thomas Donzel, (Video Reporter from France 2) in one of our eiMaths learning centre during our class. Students are shown using their manipulatives while learning Mathematical concepts.

The deputy and mathematician Cédric Villani made several recommendations to improve the learning of mathematics in a report made on Monday, February 12, 2018. He advises in particular to follow the Singapore method, now recognized around the world. This method involves the teacher not using charts or the manuals and where the numbers are replaced by small magnetic objects. This is the so-called concrete learning phase. “Mathematics is abstract, so the way to make problems real is to use objects or drawings,” explains the teacher.

Singapore tops international rankings.

Each step is repeated again and again until the four mathematical operations are perfectly assimilated by the children. The second stage is called pictorial which involves more drawings and diagrams. Twelve-year-olds can solve equations with two unknowns through what they call models. Then, when all concepts are assimilated, students begin to use abstract mathematical symbols. Singapore was at the bottom of the international mathematics rankings in 1990. Today, the city-state consistently takes first or second place.
